Animal Birth Control Programme:

The following 5 Animal Birth Control (ABC) centers are run by Greater Chennai Corporation to control stray dog population:

Sixteen specially designed dog vehicles are deployed for implementing the Animal Birth Control – Anti Rabies Vaccination programme. 5 dog catchers in each zone are engaged for catching and releasing of dogs.

The stray dogs are being caught based on PGR complaints from the public and identified hotspot areas, the dogs caught transported to ABC centres where they are sterilized and immunized against Rabies. These dogs are then released to the same area from where they are caught as per the Animal Birth Control Rules (2023).

During the years 2023 & 2024 19,640 and 20,296 Numbers of stray dogs have been caught respectively.

Veterinary Pet Clinics:

The following Pet clinics are run by Greater Chennai Corporation for providing treatment and vaccination for Pet Animals:

Licensing of Pet Dogs:

Pet animal owners should obtain Pet License from Greater Chennai Corporation for keeping their Pet animals at their house. This Licenses are being issued at GCC after payment of Rs.50/-. To make the procedure easier online Pet Animal Licensing system has been launched during this year.

During the year 2024 totally 9115 Pet Animal Licenses were issued to the Pet owners.

Control of Stray Cattle Menace:

In order to control the menace caused by the roaming cattle the stray cattle are being caught and impounded in the Pudupet and Perambur cattle pounds. After imposing fine and maintenance charges, the impounded cattle are being handed over to the cattle owner. During the years 2023 & 2024 totally 4237 and 2827 numbers of cattle were caught respectively.

Slaughterhouses:

For the purpose of providing clean and hygienic Meat to the people of Chennai four Slaughter houses are functioning at 1. Pullianthope , 2. Villiwakkam, 3. Kallikuppam, 4.Saidapet of Greater Chennai Corporation. The Veterinary Assistant Surgeons conduct Ante-Mortem and Post - Mortem inspection of animals and carcasses for ensuring hygienic meat. During the year 2024 32,258 cattle & 5,45,039 No. of sheep & goat were slaughtered in these above slaughter houses.

Unwholesome Meat Raid Programme:

Meat raid is regularly conducted in the Zone - I to XV with a team comprising of Veterinary Assistant Surgeons, Sanitary Inspectors & Sanitary Officers. Apart from regular raid, surprise raid are conducted based on specific complaints/ secret information received from public media.

The unwholesome Meat seized is destroyed with proper sanitary measures and deeply buried in the dumping yards of the Greater Chennai Corporation. During the years 2023 & 2024 totally 5155 kg & 8220 kgs of unwholesome meat were seized and destroyed.
